Why Residents in Portland Call Our Team
When a drain backs up, you rarely have time to sort through dozens of options. You want someone who understands local plumbing and can walk you through what will happen. Zoom Drain of New England works with clogged drains in Portland and nearby communities, from compact city condos to older homes in areas like Munjoy Hill and the West End.
Our goal is to make a stressful situation easier. When you contact us, our team works to schedule service as promptly as possible and let you know what to expect. On-site, the technician looks at the affected fixtures, talks with you about when the problem started, and then chooses an appropriate method to clear the blockage.
We also know that clogged drains can show up in different ways depending on the age and layout of the property. Many homes in Portland have older drain and sewer lines, and small businesses often have heavy use of restrooms or kitchen sinks. Our technicians pay attention to these details so we can address the current clog and also point out any early signs of larger issues.
Throughout the visit, we work to protect your home or business. That includes setting down coverings where needed, using clean equipment, and cleaning up our work area before we leave. You can expect clear communication from the first phone call through the final walkthrough of the job.
Common Clogged Drain Problems We Handle
Clogs can develop almost anywhere in your drainage system, and each area has its own common causes. Seeing your situation described here can help you feel confident that it is something we handle regularly. Whether your problem is in the kitchen, bathroom, or outside, our team can help track down the blockage.
Kitchen sinks often slow down or stop due to grease, food particles, and soap that build up over time. Even with a garbage disposal, items like coffee grounds, cooking oil, and fibrous foods can line the inside of pipes. Bathroom sinks, tubs, and showers frequently clog because of hair, soap scum, and products that stick to the pipe walls and catch more debris.
Toilets may clog from too much paper or from non-flushable items, including wipes that are labeled as flushable. Basement and utility room floor drains can back up when laundry, cleaning, or appliance discharge overwhelms the drain or when there is a problem further down in the main line. If you notice gurgling in multiple fixtures or see water appearing in a lower-level drain when you use plumbing upstairs, that can be a sign that the main line needs attention.
Portland’s weather can also create drainage problems outside the building. Heavy coastal rain and snowmelt can wash leaves, dirt, and sand into yard drains and driveway drains. Gutters and downspouts that are partially blocked can dump water near the foundation, where surface drains may already be struggling to keep up. In commercial parking areas, runoff from vehicles and foot traffic can clog surface drains and create large puddles that are hard to navigate.
Our technicians are prepared to address clogged drains in all of these situations. When we arrive, we assess both the immediate blockage and any signs that the problem might be further down the line. This helps us choose a practical approach for your particular property in Portland rather than treating every clog the same way.
How Our Drain Service Works in Portland
Knowing what will happen during a service visit can make it easier to pick up the phone. When you contact Zoom Drain of New England about a clogged drain service request, our office gathers a few details about the issue and your location in the area. We then set a service time and let you know what kind of arrival window to expect.
On the day of your appointment, a technician arrives with equipment suited for residential and light commercial drain work. The visit typically starts with a brief conversation about which fixtures are affected and what you have already tried. The technician then inspects the area and may perform simple tests, such as running water in certain fixtures, to understand how your system is behaving.
Once the likely location and type of clog are identified, the technician selects a method to clear the blockage. Our team uses professional-grade tools that are designed for drain cleaning, and we work to choose an approach that is appropriate for your specific pipes and fixtures. During this stage, you can expect straightforward explanations of what we are doing and why.
After the clog is removed, we check that water is draining properly and that related fixtures are working as they should. If we see any signs of corrosion, tree root intrusion, or other issues that could lead to future problems, we discuss those findings with you. Our goal is to give you enough information to make informed decisions without pressure.
Before we finish, we clean up our work area and remove any debris we created during the process. We also review what we found, answer any remaining questions, and share basic tips that relate to your situation. Throughout, we work to be respectful of your time, your property, and your budget so you feel comfortable calling us again when you need clogged drain service in the future.
What You Can Do Before We Arrive
When a drain is clogged, a few simple steps can help reduce the risk of additional damage while you wait for service. These actions are not a replacement for professional help, but they can protect your home or business and make it easier for our team to get started once we arrive.
Helpful steps to take before your appointment:
- Stop using plumbing fixtures that are backing up or draining very slowly.
- Move rugs, boxes, or valuables away from areas where water may spread.
- Wipe up standing water that you can safely reach so it does not soak into the floors.
- Avoid using harsh chemical drain cleaners, especially if you have already tried them.
- Do not attempt to open cleanouts or pipes you are not familiar with.
If you see signs of sewage, such as dark water, strong odors, or waste material, it is best to keep people and pets away from the affected area. In that situation, treating the issue as urgent is reasonable, because contaminated water can affect health and belongings. When you call, let us know what you are seeing so we can respond appropriately.
You do not need to diagnose the problem yourself before contacting us. Simply describe what is happening in your own words, such as which fixtures are affected and how long the issue has been going on. Our technicians will take it from there once they arrive at your property in Portland.

Zoom Drain came through again! Prompt and professional service. Tristan and his assistant were amazing!Bill Thompson
We had raw sewage back feeding into the cellar. From the first phone call for help to getting the issue resolved was excellent. Super courteous and excellent service. Joe, the service technician, knew the job was too big for his rig. He called in the big guns, city workers. Working together they were able to clear the main lines, and everything is back up and draining smoothly. Thank you, Zoom team. You guys did a great job.Michael Martel
Had Zoom Drain scope an outside drainage pipe under my driveway. Evan explained the process, marked all the problem areas, and provided a thumb drive with the scope video on it. Offered other services to fix problems, but I already have a fix in place. This is the second time I have used Zoom Drain and will definitely use them again in the future and would recommend them to others.Peter Kelley
Prompt, quick, and thorough. They were great communicators of what they were doing at every step and gave me a plan and options for the future. Even though my issue wasn't drain related (thank goodness!), I'm so glad I had them come out. Worth the expense for the security.Christina Michaud
Came out same day and was able to get the clog free and the camera down the drain that no one else could do. Now we know who to call from now on.Crystal Cartonio
Most wonderful experience! Joe, the technician from the Scarborough location, really knew his stuff and did great work. Would recommend to anybody.Thomas Stone
Joe was great!! He was super thorough, knowledgeable, and honest. He answered all our questions and discussed different options with us. We'll be requesting him in the future. I liked the flat-rate pricing as opposed to an hourly rate. It helps you know what you're getting upfront. I know they've got to pay workers extra for off-hours and holidays, but the emergency fee still did seem a bit exorbitant. But maybe it's standard for the industry. I don't have enough experience to know. They were at least upfront and clear about it. We'll still be calling them again, though, for more yearly service, and we'll just hope to avoid emergency calls in the future.Jessica Zee Price
